First Communion and First Penance Sacramental Preparation Grade 2

Please know that because of the pandemic, some typical First Penance and First Holy Communion preparation and celebration may be modified to satisfy safety protocols, as appropriate.

First Penance Service will be scheduled for a Saturday morning in the spring.  We ask that parents/guardians remain with the children during the service. After they have made their individual Confession and said their prayers, the children may then leave. Please no food or drink in the Church. The children may wear play clothes. We will schedule a make-up date for making First Penance if needed.

First Holy Communion Celebration is usually the first Sunday in May at the regular Parish Masses at 9 AM and 11 AM. There will be May Crownings of the Blessed Mother after both Masses. The families of Religious Education and Our Lady’s Academy celebrate First Eucharist combined randomly as a group – one group at the 9 AM Mass and one group at the 11 AM Mass.  Children sit with their families in dedicated pews indicated by a decorated family banner. Banner kits are distributed to each family prior to the celebration. However, due to the pandemic, First Communion Mass for First Communion families may need to be adjusted as appropriate.

Rehearsal is the Saturday before First Holy Communion at 9 am to 10 am for those in the 9 am Sunday celebration and at 10 am to 11 am for those in the 11 am celebration. However, we may need to be flexible as in our First Communion Mass scheduling.

Dress Code

Boys can wear the traditional white communion suit, however this is not required. They may wear a suit of another color or dress pants, shirt and tie.

Girls can wear the traditional white communion dress with the veil. The veil is not required – they can wear a headband, some small flowers or any other appropriate hair accessory or nothing instead of the veil. Girls cannot wear gloves however and neither boys nor girls may carry rosaries. Hands must be bare and empty to receive the Host.

We will hire a professional photographer who will take a group photo prior to each celebration as well as individual pictures of each child as they receive their First Holy Communion. We ask that no photos be taken during the Mass at all – this is a firm rule.
