Adult Choir

OLCA CHOIR OVERVIEW: The OLCA Adult Choir has a long an extraordinary tradition as one of the few SATB (Soprano Alto Tenor Bass, singing in four-part harmony) parish choirs in the Archdiocese of Boston.  Although many parishes have wonderful choirs, they, since the early 1970's, have had choirs that sing only melodies ("in unison") or in 2-part harmony.  The great tradition of an SATB choir at Our Lady's is partly due to its tradition of having highly qualified music directors.

CHOIR LEADERSHIP AND HISTORY:  Under Father DiPerri's leadership, and that of new music director Kevin Galie, J.D., M. Mus. (MIT Women's Chorale, Coro-Dante, Blessed John XXIII National Seminary, Simmons College, Editions AMH Music Publishers, Arena di Verona) the OLCA choir looks to continue this fine tradition of classical sacred music in English and Latin, and to add in for fun, a smattering of the very latest contemporary Christian music from music composed not more than within the last three years.  Kevin Galie's musical participation with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, Boston Symphony, Masterworks Chorale, and New Bedford Symphony enable him to spread the good reputation of Our Lady's music program, and his involvement for the Archdiocese of Boston Center for Evangelization for Young Adults enables Mr. Galie to stay in touch with the latest music of our Catholic youth from across the country.

CHOIR COMPOSITION/SIMPLE BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  The OLCA choir is composed of about 20 members and new members, who can satisfy a basic requirement of repeating back a simple short melody in the proper pitch, are always welcome and sought after.

TEENAGERS/COLLEGE STUDENTS WELCOME:  We are hoping that those high school juniors and seniors that sing in their high school choruses would consider being affiliated with us and sing with us when they are able, and we will be seeking out who in the parish falls into this category.  Solo opportunities, if desired, will happily be fostered - we want the parish to hear our young, up-and-coming in-house talent.  We realize most college students are away, but for those that sing, we request that they or their family make themselves known to us so that they might join us for when they come home at Christmas.

REHEARSALS/SCHEDULE:  The OLCA choir typically rehearses Wednesday Eves from 7-8:15, and Sunday AM at 10:30-10:45 for the 11 AM mass.  Occasionally we take Wednesday eve off, and rehearse Sunday at 10AM on the school stage.  The Wednesday evening rehearsals start and end on time on Wednesdays so the commitment is minimal.

CHOIR FAMILIES TOGETHER IN WORSHIP:  Mr. Galie has extensive experience working with Catholic choirs in both Colombia and his country of dual-citizenship, Italy.  In those countries, it is common for children and non-singing spouses to be in the choir area with the adult choir so they can worship together as a family at Mass.  Our Lady's is blessed with an unusual, but very large choir area that can easily accommodate 50 people, so having family members with us is easy to accommodate, as long as the sensitive and somewhat unconventional placement which the architects gave us of the choir behind the tabernacle is respected.
